Sustainability & Fitness
For a Healthier Person & Planet
This month, we’re talking about sustainability — in every sense of the word. With Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how our personal health habits connect to the health of our planet. Taking care of our bodies and taking care of the earth aren’t separate goals — they’re deeply connected. When we move more, consume mindfully, and build routines that last, we’re not just investing in our own well-being — we’re contributing to a healthier, more sustainable world for everyone.
And there’s no better way to celebrate that than by getting active — together. Keep scrolling for practical tips to build habits that last and ways you can move with me this month, in person or online. Let’s make it a season of sustainable strength.
Making Sustainability HOT
Anyone can start a new habit but the real magic happens when it sticks. Sustainable health and fitness isn’t about doing the most — it’s about doing what lasts. Here are 5 ways to build habits that actually go the distance:
Focus on Consistency Over Intensity
It’s tempting to go all-in, but sustainability lives in small, repeatable actions. A 20-minute walk every day will do more for you over time than one perfect workout per week.
Set Flexible Goals
Life happens. Build habits that allow for grace, not guilt. Can’t get your full workout in? Stretch, walk, or do a quick mobility routine. Progress isn’t lost, it’s adjusted.
Make It Enjoyable (Within Reason)
Hate running? Stop forcing it. Sustainable habits feel good. Yes, it’s important to challenge yourself to do hard things but there are so many ways to get active that you can often find challenging and enjoyable forms of movement. Need more cardio? Try dancing, hiking, swimming, or pickleball — and do more of what brings you joy.
Stack Habits Into Your Existing Routine
Pair a new habit with something you already do. For example:
→ Do bodyweight squats while waiting for your coffee
→ Stretch while watching Netflix
→ Pack a snack while prepping tomorrow’s lunch
Prioritize Recovery Like You Prioritize Workouts
Long-term health isn’t built on burnout. Sleep, rest days, hydration, and nutrition are non-negotiables. If you want to see results for years to come — take care of your whole self.
5 Tips for Making Your Fitness Routine Good for You AND the Planet
Eco-Friendly Fitness Practices - help your body while helping the planet
Moving your body is great for your health and it can be great for the planet too. Here are 5 ways to make your fitness routine a little greener:
Walk or Bike When You Can
Swap a short drive for a walk or bike ride. It’s a win-win for your health and the environment.
Choose Reusable Water Bottles & Gear
Say goodbye to single-use plastics. Invest in a durable water bottle, reusable snack containers, and long-lasting workout gear.
Support Local & Sustainable Brands
When buying fitness clothing or equipment, look for brands that prioritize ethical manufacturing, recycled materials, or small-batch production.
Exercise Outdoors
Reduce your energy use (and boost your mood!) by swapping treadmill runs or indoor workouts for parks, trails, and outdoor spaces when weather allows.
Donate or Repurpose Old Gear
Instead of trashing old workout clothes or equipment, donate them to local shelters, schools, or community programs — or get creative and repurpose them.
